Read Alouds for the Kids

I got hooked on the idea of learning from literature somewhere in our second year of homeschooling when I was introduced to TJed (short for Thomas Jefferson Education, also called Leadership Education). And while I have always loved literature myself, I hadn't made a conscious effort to include reading as a part of our family culture until then.

At that time I delved deeply into TJed, learning all I could about it. After giving it a good college try, I had to admit to myself that TJEd as a whole was not a good fit for me or our family. However, I retain nuggets from this approach to education. For example, many of the books on the list below are books that we read for our "family book club", an idea that was revealed to me via TJed.

I loved our family book club meetings. They were beneficial in so many ways. The other families in our club were not homeschoolers, but also loved literature. When our daughter died, I let go of this part of our homeschool for many reasons that I cannot even begin to explain here. And while I sometimes miss our club meetings, I know that at some point, somewhere, with someone, our family will pick up this loved tradition again. In the mean time, here is a list of books that we have read aloud. Again, not a complete list, but a fond reminder of many hours spent with the kids reading a good book.
